Introduction to Athletics in the Somali community is supported by The National Lottery Community Fund which began in June 2021 to deliver regular athletics coaching sessions for children from the Somali community. The project aims to improve accessibility to sports and improve physical health wellbeing during the Covid-19 pandemic and beyond.

During the summer school holidays (photos in our gallery section) forty-one different children attended twice-a-week coached sessions. Every child had an opportunity to have fun whilst developing their fundamental movement skills such as running, jumping, throwing, and catching.

The children were able to meet with some of their friends as well as making new friendships, whilst improving their fitness and learning new skills as well as being awarded with medals and certificates of achievements. The Athletics sessions also offered opportunities for some of older children to support younger children and some have indicated to want become run leaders with Uffo Athletic in the future.
